I love this story:

Grigory Perelman does not want our attention but he may merit it. He offers a model of behavior which very well may be foreign to our time, but, still, we ought to know that it’s an available option: grumpiness, misanthropy, and a radical lack of interest in publicity—and, it seems, money, too.

To be able to close the door. To slam the door.

Perelman is a mathematician from St. Petersburg, Russia—where he lives with his mother and sister—who, a few years ago, solved a century-old math problem, Poincaré’s conjecture. This is one of seven fabled math problems, the solution for which the Clay Mathematics Institute in Cambridge, Mass., has offered $1 million—for each solution.

Perelman has not only so far shunned the dough, but when reached by a reporter said, with fabulous succinctness and practicality: “You are disturbing me. I am picking mushrooms.”

I have always wished that we lived in a world in which people valued solitude more. In my experience, anyone who likes to be left alone is considered weird, antisocial, and potentially bad news.

William Deresiewicz writes in a similar vein, emphasizing that it is important to control the constant stream of stimulus we receive from the outside and the demands that others place on us in order to think for ourselves and to grow:

Here’s the other problem with Facebook and Twitter and even The New York Times. When you expose yourself to those things, especially in the constant way that people do now—older people as well as younger people—you are continuously bombarding yourself with a stream of other people’s thoughts. You are marinating yourself in the conventional wisdom. In other people’s reality: for others, not for yourself. You are creating a cacophony in which it is impossible to hear your own voice, whether it’s yourself you’re thinking about or anything else. (Italics mine)

I can relate, in particular, to the last two sentences above, italicized. Over the past couple of years, I have come to realize that it is of the utmost importance to give yourself space to think, that is, to think in your own idiosyncratic way, on your own terms, without regard to what other people may think of how you think. Constant exposure to the thoughts of others seems to get in the way of this (e.g., blogs, RSS, the Internet in general, television). Of course, we can discipline ourselves better and rise to the attention-economy challenge posed by the Internet, but I don’t think that such discipline will completely solve the problem. Our ability to think for ourselves will still be inhibited more than it would have been otherwise.

Some people manage just fine the challenge of thinking on their own terms, while simultaneously exposing themselves to a constant stream of others’ thoughts. Often times, in those cases, they don’t produce anything that original or interesting. Regarding those that do, I wonder if they actually listen to the thoughts of others when exposed to them, or just listen to their own evaluations of the thoughts of others. The latter, while preserving one’s mental autonomy, would negate some of the value of exposure to others’ ideas. It is also, in my view, an indicator of biased thinking.

A summary of the two articles linked to above can be found here. (HT: Chris).

A couple of days ago, Alexander McCobin of Students for Liberty, applauded the inclusion of GOPround, a gay Republican group, at CPAC. He was roundly booed, then cheered. Following his remarks, Ryan Sorba gave an anti-gay rant. Both have been broadcast on national television and have received plenty of attention in the blogosphere. You can see the videos here.

The bottom line is clear: Many conservatives are not truly committed to liberty in any fundamental way. Rather, depending on the issue at stake, they pick and choose the extent to which they incorporate liberty into their position. I applaud Alexander’s courage in defending liberty despite hostile elements in the audience. He serves as in inspiration to us all. He is right. They are wrong.

I finished reading Book 1 of Plato’s Republic today. I am a little disappointed and can see why people get turned off from philosophy, as Socrates seems to engage in a lot of suspect reasoning, casting doubt on anyone’s position by playing word games that, more often than not, don’t help clarify an issue (in this case, the issue being “What is justice?”). However, Book 2 seems to be more promising. We’ll see…

Robert Wright, the author of The Evolution of God, has a recent op-ed in the New York Times, suggesting that hardcore atheists and creationists could find some common ground. I loved this article. He offers examples of how those with a highly scientific worldview (like myself) could still potentially find room for purpose of a divine nature, properly defined.

Some excerpts:

If evolution does tend to eventually “converge” on certain moral intuitions, does that mean there were moral rules “out there” from the beginning, before humans became aware of them — that natural selection didn’t “invent” human moral intuitions so much as “discover” them? That would be good news for any believers who want to preserve as much of the spirit of C. S. Lewis as Darwinism permits.

Something like this has been suggested by the evolutionary psychologist Steven Pinker — who, as a contented atheist, can’t be accused of special pleading.

Mr. Pinker has noted how the interplay of evolved intuition and the dynamics of discourse tends to forge agreement on something like the golden rule — that you should treat people as you expect to be treated. He compares this natural apprehension of a moral principle to the depth perception humans have thanks to the evolution of stereo vision. Not all species (not even all two-eyed species) have stereo vision, Mr. Pinker says, but any species that has it is picking up on “real facts about the universe” that were true even before that species evolved — namely, the three-dimensional nature of reality and laws of optics.

Similarly, certain intuitions about reciprocal moral obligation are picking up on real facts about the logic of discourse and about generic social dynamics — on principles that were true even before humans came along and illustrated them. Including, in particular, the non-zero-sum dynamics that are part of our universe.

As Mr. Pinker once put it in conversation with me: “There may be a sense in which some moral statements aren’t just … artifacts of a particular brain wiring but are part of the reality of the universe, even if you can’t touch them and weigh them.” Comparing these moral truths to mathematical truths, he said that perhaps “they’re really true independent of our existence. I mean, they’re out there and in some sense — it’s very difficult to grasp — but we discover them, we don’t hallucinate them.”

I am finding myself more and more interested in this kind of natural theology, and I wonder how much serious work has been done in the area. Based on my experience, scientists tend to do a poor job when it comes to serious philosophy. On the other hand, non-scientists tend to have a poor understanding of various important nuances of a scientific theory. In my view, philosophers of science tend to score best when it comes to both understanding the science and analyzing it from a philosophical point of view, but at times, there can be a relativist strain in the field. Barring that, I think philosophers of science with somewhat of a “spiritual” component are best poised to offer worthwhile ideas. I wonder how many such people exist.

Later on, Dr. Wright ends with:

William James said that religious belief is “the belief that there is an unseen order, and that our supreme good lies in harmoniously adjusting ourselves thereto.” Science has its own version of the unseen order, the laws of nature.

On a somewhat unrelated note, Dr. Wright writes:

[E]volutionary psychologists have developed a plausible account of the moral sense. They say it is in large part natural selection’s way of equipping people to play non-zero-sum games — games that can be win-win if the players cooperate or lose-lose if they don’t.

Markets do a great job at creating positive-sum games. Barring fraud and large, distorting informational asymmetries, two parties to a trade generally participate in it if and only if they expect to come out ahead. However, many people have a natural aversion to markets. I only wish that evolution had endowed all humans with market-friendly propensities. The world would be a much better place.

But maybe I am jumping the gun. People do have natural tendency to trade, as Adam Smith noted (see here). They do see most trades they partake in as being in their own interest. Unfortunately, they often lack an abstract understanding of how free trade is just and benefits all parties involved, and so, they fall prey to arguments developed over the last 150 years to the contrary. In addition, money tends to cloud their judgment, as they view the person who received the money (and not the good) as the beneficiary.

Market-friendly individuals like myself understand that the economic justification for free markets is based on the structure of the world and the constraints it places on humans and their ability to achieve their goals. At least part of our understanding of markets is based on something that is “out there”, similar to the laws of physics. As my friend Roman Jury says, “The law of comparative advantage is the closest thing that economists have to a Newton’s Law.” Perhaps, evolution has naturally guided people to trade (which is in their own interest), but has made people ill-equipped to abstractly understand why their instinct actually serves their interest and what the best societal structure is to allow such instincts to serve their interests to the maximal extent possible.

Joel has a couple of interesting posts, one on incremental change that leads to a phase change, and another entitled “Complexity and Collapse“. In the former, he worries that a marginal change in the state of affairs may lead to a phase change. As an example of this, think of how Lehman’s bankruptcy is what arguable set off the financial crisis last September (even though Bear Stearns’ failure had no such effect). Such changes can be chaotic, non-linear, and difficult or impossible to predict.

In “Complexity and Collapse”, he notes that complex systems can lead to their own demise.

However, he misses the flip side: An incremental change can be what triggers a garden of good things. The interesting question is, “Under what conditions or structure might incremental changes be channelled so that the changes leading to bad phase changes are avoided (or at least their effects minimized or contained) and the good phase changes increase in probability?” Similarly, I think what is interesting to think about under what conditions may complexity be a good thing? What makes some complex systems desirable, fruitful, and not so dangerous, whereas others are undesirable and dangerous?

These thoughts may sound a little muddled. I intend to develop my ideas on this in further posts over the coming weeks.
