I finished reading Book 1 of Plato’s Republic today. I am a little disappointed and can see why people get turned off from philosophy, as Socrates seems to engage in a lot of suspect reasoning, casting doubt on anyone’s position by playing word games that, more often than not, don’t help clarify an issue (in this case, the issue being “What is justice?”). However, Book 2 seems to be more promising. We’ll see…
